The name.
Puʻu is hill. Loa is long, large, grand. Together: long hill. Early Hawaiian settlers called the Pearl Harbor area Puʻuloa — the founder’s hometown of Pearl City. The name is a tip of the hat to Hawaiʻi Nei, and to the journey of a life. What is life if not one long hill?
Puʻuloa began on August 23, 2023, when the founder met Wendley “Bert” Kekauoha — Native Hawaiian, 101st Airborne, Vietnam veteran — in a Baltimore music shop. They found two steel guitars and a shared division. Uncle Bert remains a founding member. The first performance was Clare and Don’s Beach Shack, Falls Church, in September 2023.
